Vincent

"Vincent" from Ronan Keating's Songs for my Mother Album.

Over the last 5 years this song was in my collection with 24 play counts and have 5 star rating. Which means one of my favorites.  I knew it was an old song, a sensitive song, that Keating did as a cover but didn't knew who's got the originals. And today I got this wonderful information that originals got a backstory which makes it more sensitive song.

Rather than sharing the Keating version which lead me to the Vincent, I would like to share the originals performed by Don McLean.

Here it goes. If you listen to songs which have back stories, which sung by the lyricist, it should be always the live performance to see the true emotions of singing. (Hope you remember "Tears of Heaven" co-written and sung by Eric Clapton) And a touch of acoustic give them more soothing sense.

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night

You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for
One as beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Any Idea what's this about??? Who is Vincent???
Okay, I'll give you a clue. Look at the following image. Search for this painting. :)

This is a painting done by great artist Vincent van Gogh. And this painting was called by "Starry Starry Night". Here you go.... Vincent and the Starry Starry Night. So I will not tell what happened to Vincent, hope you could find it by yourself if you touched with the lyrics as I did. But I will share what Don McLean has to say about the genesis of the song.

“In the autumn of 1970 I had a job singing in the school system, playing my guitar in classrooms. I was sitting on the veranda one morning, reading a biography of Van Gogh, and suddenly I knew I had to write a song arguing that he wasn’t crazy. He had an illness and so did his brother Theo. This makes it different, in my mind, to the garden variety of 'crazy'. So I sat down with a print of Starry Night and wrote the lyrics out on a paper bag.”

Tribute for the Vincent, the misunderstood genius, who was not appreciated in his lifetime.
